B.C. NDP MLA and cabinet minister Claire Trevena will not run in the upcoming provincial election.

Trevana is the sixth cabinet minister to reveal they would not run again, as speculation grows that Premier John Horgan is considering a snap election and has asked all his MLAs to state their position on re-election.

Trevena – a four-term MLA for North Island and currently Minister for Transportation and Infrastructure – said “It is time to move on and take on new challenges.”

Last Thursday, NDP MLA and Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Judy Darcy said she would not seek re-election in the New Westminster riding she has held for two terms.

Last Wednesday, Michelle Mungall, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Competitiveness, said she won’t be running again, either. She said she wants to spend more time with her family, including her two-year-old son.

At that point, Mungall was the fourth NDP minister to announce that they’re not seeking re-election, joining Minister of Forests Doug Donaldson; Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction Shane Simpson; and Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Scott Fraser.

In March, Finance Minister Carole James announced she would not be seeking re-election to focus on her health after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.
